There are so many reasons for Christians, especially Roman Catholics, to learn their prayers in Latin that one scarcely knows how to begin listing them but, basically, they boil down to three. Praying in Latin:
|
Prayers of
the Rosary
|
In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
Credo in Spiritum Sanctum, sanctam Ecclesiam catholicam, sanctorum communionem, remissionem peccatorum, carnis resurrectionem, vitam æternam. Amen.
Pater Noster, qui es in cælis: sanctificetur nomen tuum;
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
* One may insert the following phrases as an aid in meditating on the mysteries:
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto;
O mi Jesu, dimitte nobis debita nostra, libera nos ab ignis infernis, conduc in cælum omnes animas, præsertim illas quæ maxime indigent misericordia tua.
Amen.
|
Angelus
|
Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ.
Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto. Ave Maria ...
Ecce Ancilla Domini.
Fiat mihi secundum Verbum tuum. Ave Maria ...
Et Verbum caro factum est.
Et habitavit in nobis. Ave Maria ...
Ora pro nobis, Sancta Dei Genetrix.
Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.
Oremus. Amen.
|
During Eastertide, the Regina cæli is said (or better, sung) in place of the Angelus.
|
Regina cæli, lætare, alleluia,
quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia,
resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia;
ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia!
|
Gospel Canticles
The Gospel Canticles from the Liturgy of the Hours are invariable throughout the liturgical year and thus lend themselves well, devotionally and educationally, to being prayed in Latin.
|
Canticle of Zachariah (Morning Prayer)
Canticle of Mary (Evening Prayer)
Magnificat anima mea Dominum, et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salvatore meo, quia respexit humilitatem ancillæ suæ. Ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes, quia fecit mihi magna, qui potens est, et sanctum nomen eius, et misericordia eius in progenies et progenies timentibus eum. Fecit potentiam in brachio suo, dispersit superbos mente cordis sui;
Canticle of Simeon (Night Prayer)
Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace, quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum, quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum, lumen ad revelationem gentium et gloriam plebis tuæ Israel.

Prayers in
Daily Life
|
Table grace: Benedic, Domine, nos, et hæc tua dona, quæ de tua largitate sumus sumpturi. Per Christum Dóminum nostrum. Amen.
For the faithful departed: Requiem æternam dona ei (eis), Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei (eis). Requiescat (requiescant) in pace. Amen.
Some other prayers:
Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Jesu, exaudi me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meæ voca me.
Et iube me venire ad te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te.
In sæcula sæculorum. Amen.
Memorare, O piissima Virgo Maria,
non esse auditum a sæculo,
quemquam ad tua currentem præsidia,
tua implorantem auxilia,
tua petentem suffragia,
esse derelictum.
Ego tali animatus confidentia,
ad te, Virgo Virginum, Mater, curro,
ad te venio, coram te gemens peccator assisto.
Noli, Mater Verbi, verba mea despicere;
sed audi propitia et exaudi. Amen.
