Catechized in the USA- a very short note
I was raised Catholic, but honestly speaking , we were not catechized well after Vatican II because nobody was sure about what they should be teaching. They gave me a book when I was 11 and told me to read it. That was my CCD that year. Then when I started Jr High, I transferred from public school to Catholic School. I learned very little about my faith in those 6 years from 7th grade through 12th grade. One nun made us learn 2 prayers which I actually liked but that was the extent of learning the faith for those 6 years of religion classes. However, we did get pretty good at making posters and collages. Even though, I went to Catholic school in Jr High and High School. we had to go to our Church CCD for Confirmation classes. For most catholics that is the end of any formal learning about the catholic faith. And for most of us those are the last classes about Catholicism that we will ever have
As Catholic adults, generally speaking, we do not do much by way of learning any more about our faith or taking any classes to understand it better or to help us grow in our faith. Our faith gets very little adult reflection, so even when we were taught well before Vatican II, most of us are still left with a rather childish understanding of our faith... a concept of fath that a 6 - 12 year old would have. I have actually learned my faith as as adult. I learned it mostly by listening to the converts, those who read their way into the faith, and by watching EWTN. Those got me started and now I also do my research. With a 2000 year history and billions of souls that have passed through, some great role models, some horrid traitors and some wonderful saints. Each and every soul that has passed through is a sinner, none are perfect. But, oh my, it can be quite an interesting journey through time. Yet, it is a timeless journey! ~A timeless Journey Through Time~ There is a vast and rich treasure trove of information on a wide variety pf different paths and methods for spiritual growth....It is such a rich and deep heritage. I had no idea. One could live 20 lifetimes spending all of your time learning about the faith in each one and still not scratch the surface, I love to study it now,,,,yeah now that I do not have that many years left ...Oh well, I look forward to learning right up to the day that my time comes or as long as my brain will cooperate....
