The calendar of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church was thoroughly revised after the Second Vatican Council. Pope Paul VI announced his approval of the reorganization of the liturgical year and calendar in 1969, declaring that the purpose was "no other . . . than to permit the faithful to communicate in a more intense way, through faith, hope and love, in the whole mystery of Christ."
In the ecclesiastical year presented here, all the revisions pertaining to the universal Church have been incorporated. Included also are the saints who are traditionally honored on certain days, either locally or universally, but who are not in the liturgical calendar for the universal Church.
The names of saints who are celebrated liturgically in the universal Church are in capital letters. The names of saints celebrated liturgically but only in certain areas are in lower-case letters and are italicized. The saints who are traditionally honored on certain days but are not liturgically celebrated are in lowercase letters. Names appearing with an asterisk (*) are those of saints from the United States.
