Students Angry at Catholic School for Teaching Catholic Faith – UPDATED

If you’re running late on saying your Chaplet of Divine Mercy today*, consider offering it for Bishop Jugis of Charlotte, NC. A friend writes:
It’s just weird. Weird. Tip of the day: Do not be alarmed when people who practice a particular religion actually believe and speak about what their faith teaches.
They might be wrong. Statistically speaking, they probably are wrong. (In this case, she’s not, but then of course I’d say that.)

I have not yet reviewed these myself, but I’m game for a discussion once I’ve had a chance to do so. Please hold your comments debating the talks until I’ve gotten a chance to be informed enough to answer your questions intelligently. (I’ll take “What do Catholics believe?” questions now, but not, “I think Catholics are wrong” questions. Because: Weekend. This is not a debate thread, do not open debate unless you’re trying to get blacklisted. We have other posts for that. Not this one. ) I’ll tell you when it’s time, and until then, it’s not time.

Anger at Charlotte Catholic school after speaker criticizes homosexuality
In case you haven’t seen this yet, there’s some serious controversy over in Charlotte.This is not a discrimination case. No jobs are at stake, no employee is being fired, none of that. A Catholic religious sister is invited to speak at a Catholic school, and she shows up and teaches the Catholic faith. And students are upset about this.
Links at the bottom of the news article also link to the diocesan newspaperI have spoken on the telephone with Bishop Jugis’s administrative assistant, and the first thing she said to me (she actually returned my earlier phone call) was that it was so nice to hear some SUPPORT and something POSITIVE for the Bishop in the midst of this controversy.If you feel so moved, contact the Charlotte Diocese and perhaps the school to pledge your moral and prayerful support of orthodox Catholic moral teaching?
Would you please commit to pray for Bishop Jugis as he prepares for this upcoming parent meeting? He’s a good man, a faithful shepherd. You can bet your bottom dollar there will be a lot of dissenters present who have no connection with the school. You can bet your bottom dollar that the spirit of the meeting won’t be congenial on the dissenters’ side. Bishop Jugis will be facing some willful ignorance and more than a little bit of hostility.

“we the students of Charlotte Catholic High School, acting on our Catholic beliefs, are declaring a formal objection towards all those who do not accept Sister Jane Dominic’s lecture … We are outraged that the topics talked about are being debated within a community where the shared faith teaches us what truly is holy and that anyone would stand up against a nun, who has given her life for the Lord, and blatantly deny God’s teachings.”If you’re gonna be Catholic, be Catholic.
And if you’re gonna be Catholic, pray for Bishop Jugis.

Anger at Charlotte Catholic school after speaker criticizes homosexuality

Some parents and students at one of North Carolina’s largest Catholic schools are outraged after a Nashville Dominican nun who holds a doctorate in theology criticized homosexuality in a presentation to students, according to the Charlotte Observer. “We the students of Charlotte Catholic High School would like to issue a formal complaint regarding Sr. Jane Dominic [Laurel]’s speech,” according to an online petition. “We believe that same sex couples have the ability to raise happy, well-adjusted and successful children … We believe that homosexual couples are capable of monogamy. As rational people, we know that most homosexual people lead healthy, normal and productive lives like their heterosexual counterparts.” An alternate petition states that “we the students of Charlotte Catholic High School, acting on our Catholic beliefs, are declaring a formal objection towards all those who do not accept Sister Jane Dominic's lecture … We are outraged that the topics talked about are being debated within a community where the shared faith teaches us what truly is holy and that anyone would stand up against a nun, who has given her life for the Lord, and blatantly deny God’s teachings.” Update March 31st: Bishop Peter Jugis is reported to be monitoring this situation closely and diocesan officials will attend a meeting with parents and students at the school on April 2. We reported earlier that Bishop Jugis was going to attend this meeting personally, but this was an error. He is scheduled for the dedication of a new church at that time.
