A Chronology Of the SSPX's Foundation: "ad experimentum" - Part I
1970, Nov.1:
The decree of foundation was signed by Mgr. Charriere. Ecône Full Stop, Fortes in Fide, by Fr. Noél Barbara. This issue is viewable HERE
The photocopy of the "Décret d'erection de la 'Fraternité Sacerdotale Internationale Saint Pie X" is plainly exhibited in the November 1980 issue of "The Angelus."
Bishop François Charrière of the Diocese of Fribourg in Switzerland agreed to allow the Society of St. Pius X to come into his diocese and set up their seminary at Ecône. He did so on an ad experimentum basis of six years. In other words, they were on probation.

1.2  THE CANONICAL SUPPRESSION OF THE SSPX
Like the years immediately following any Ecumenical Council in the history of the Church, the period after the Second Vatican Council would prove tumultuous within the Church. Nevertheless, the SSPX and their seminary began to draw both vocations and international attention.  Unfortunately, this attention would lead to both its suppression and the suspension a divinis of Archbishop Lefebvre.

An Open Letter From A Confused Catholic
"Who can deny that Catholics in the latter part of the twentieth century are confused?...Only a short time ago the path was clearly marked; either one followed it or one did not...", 1 wrote Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1986. Regarding that state of confusion, he asked:
"How can the ordinary faithful decide? For the validity of a mass there exist essential conditions; matter, form, intention and the validly ordained priest. If these conditions are filled one cannot see how to conclude invalidity (Emphasis added.) The prayers of the Offertory, the Canon and the priest's communion are necessary for the integrity of the sacrifice and the sacrament but not for its validity. Cardinal Mindszenty pronouncing in secret in his prison the words of Consecration over a little bread and wine, so as to nourish himself with the body and blood of Our Lord without being seen by his guards, was certainly accomplishing the sacrifice and the sacrament."...More

An Open Letter To Confused 'traditionalists'
"In the interests of elucidating what a genuine "traditional" theology means, TCR continues its analysis of the Society of St. Pius X, convinced that any theology which attributes serious error or heresy to the magisterium is---by definition---outside the parameters of Catholic doctrine, whether they be drum-beating liberals or High Mass SSPX'ers. The Society of St. Pius X prints books with pictures of the Pope peering like a demon (Cf. their Johannes Dormann books). The theology behind such schemes must be scrutinized. Many of us had to learn the hard way. We wish to make it easier for others. John Loughnan has done the Church an important service." Stephen Hand, Traditional Catholic Resources Note....More

An Opinion On Allegations Regarding The Pope Receiving The 'Mark of Shiva' and His Semi-naked Mass in Papua New Guinea
"Your article was very interesting. The Mark of Shiva slander is incredibly ridiculous, and I have been trying to stamp it out ever since I went to India in 1996 and received something like the Tilak at a school in a slum I was helping to rebuild from one of the schoolgirls. It was just about as far from any Pagan worship as you could get - it was simply a form of greeting. Real Pagan worship was seen somewhat later on another day just outside the slum. A procession of these depraved pagans was passing by with all the shouting, crying out, and whirling dances that one might expect from idolators when confronted with their idol. These sort of slanders can only come about from those westerners who are simply in the grossest ignorance of other cultures." Andy Byler.

"A fine article. Yes, we should give the Pope every benefit of the doubt. We would give our own natural father as much; why not our spiritual father?" [Franciscan] Bro Alexis Bugnolo....More

Archbishop LEFEBVRE a latter-day St. ATHANASIUS?
Bishop Bruskewitz to the Society of St. Pius X: "You can't have it both ways!"

Still, the sympathy, admiration and gratitude we may have toward Archbishop Lefebvre must not blind us to our duty toward the Church. It may be all right to consider the archbishop something of a latter day Patrick Henry, but only if we keep in mind that it was not George III who our Lord Jesus Christ was addressing when He said: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church" and "He who hears you hears me." Similarly, some have cast Archbishop Lefebvre as a modern St. Athanasius, suffering for his opposition to modernism much as the fourth century Doctor of the Church endured persecution and exile for fighting Arianism. This comparison falls short because the historical conditions are not analogous. Most of St. Athanasius' persecutors were themselves heretics, usurpers or intrusive emperors. One exception was, of course, Pope Liberius, who under duress condemned Athanasius in 357. ...More

Archbishop Lefebvre - His "Anything But Consistent Mind!
April 03, 1969
Pope Paul & Council Fathers agreed to minor updating of the Mass to the extent that the Proper or Readings & perhaps the introductory prayers could be in the vernacular. Archbishop Lefebvre signed the Liturgy Constitution. ("Catholic", Apr 83, p3.) However, a series of exchanges appeared from the September 1990 to November 1991 in "Catholic", between Fr Brian W. Harrison, O.S. and Mr Des. J. McDonnell (who maintained that Archbishop Lefebvre had not signed Dignitatis Humanae. ). Don McLean, Editor of "Catholic" definitely sided with McDonnell's false opinion.

Are 'traditionalists' being too hard on the pope re: Islam?
PEARS CYCLOPEDIA, 1996 gives the figures for adherents to ISLAM = over 1,000 million, and ROMAN CATHOLICISM = 1,040 million.
Now, I guess that one could quibble about the "exact" figures, but I would like to draw your attention to the following interesting points.
Islam may well be said to have commenced with the production of the Quran/Koran in 610.
The pope of the time was St Boniface IV, 608 - 615, the 67th pope.
From his time to (and including) that of the reign of Pope Pius XII there have been 192 popes - including 23 Saints and 7 Blesseds.
Despite any efforts of those 192 popes

Corvo's Syndrome and Papal Authority, by James Murray
Corvo's Syndrome and Papal Authority, by James Murray
Corvo's Syndrome - a quasi-delusional state in which an individual sees himself, not the incumbent, as the Pope of Rome - is now rampant, in and out of the Catholic Church.
Nor should the patriarchal bias of the pronoun 'himself' be allowed to create the impression that Corvo's Syndrome is confined to men. Women, too, are affected by it, possibly more deeply affected because women are also more intelligent, more sensitive, more everything than men.
And it must be emphasised that the delusion of being Pope marks the extreme manifestation of the syndrome. Less chronic forms are characterised by the belief that one enjoys an authority more or less equivalent to that of the Pope.

Does the Church Have Power Over the Form and Matter of the Sacraments
"THE DECREE FOR THE ARMENIANS", 1439 pp. 47-55. The only official pronouncement on the matter and form of Orders made before the Council of Trent is contained in the famous Decree for the Armenians ratified in a solemn session of the Ecumenical Council of Florence on 22 November 1439, and signed by Pope Eugenius IV, eight cardinals, two patriarchs, five archbishops, thirty-five bishops, twenty-five abbots, and the Armenian envoys. The section of this decree dealing with ordination either conflicts, or at least appears to conflict, with the solemn and definitive pronouncement of Pope Pius XII in 1947. The Decree for the Armenians says:

DEFENCE OF THE PAULINE MASS, A
1. Did Pope Paul VI have authorization to create a New Mass?
This issue is the one most central to the debate. Many so-called traditionalists charge that the Pauline Mass is invalid and Pope Paul VI did not have the authority to change the Tridentine Mass.
The Tridentine Mass is supposedly the only Mass that has been preserved for 2000 years, with little change. Finally, the charge is that Pope St. Pius V definitively declared that this Mass promulgated was never to be altered, changed. Let us look at some of the most important texts that relate:

...relevant Catholic authority ("whatsoever thou shalt bind ... and ... loose ...", Matt 16:19.) combined portion of the consecratory form from some of the Gospels, from St. Paul AND from Tradition. None should dispute the fact that, throughout the history of Christianity, those rites were valid which did not contain the form for the consecration of the wine, as set out by the Councils of Florence and Trent — but which DID contain the essential words: "This is my blood", or "This is the cup of my blood". To do so would be to call the Apostles liars, and their consecrations invalid.

Dr. Jeffrey Bond on Fr. Carlos Urrutigoity
"In a letter dated December 8, 2001, I revealed that Fr. Carlos Urrutigoity, the founder and former superior general of the Society of St. John, had been dismissed for homosexual behavior when he was a seminarian at the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) seminary in La Reja, Argentina. In that same letter, I noted that Urrutigoity, after he had been dismissed from the seminary in La Reja, was admitted as a seminarian into the SSPX seminary in Winona, Minnesota, where he was eventually ordained and made a professor. Finally, I further mentioned that Fr. Urrutigoity was subsequently expelled from the seminary in Winona as a result of his subversive activities.
"My letter left many readers with the same question: How could it be that the SSPX dismissed Carlos Urrutigoity for homosexual behavior from one of its seminaries, but subsequently accepted him into another SSPX seminary, and then ultimately ordained him a priest and even made him a professor there?

The Ecclesia Dei adflicta Indult - Custom and the 1962 Roman Missal
Fr. John Huels, a professor of canon law at Saint Paul University, recently published an advisory opinion with Canon Law Society of America in which he addresses various errors concerning the use of the 1962 Roman Missal. One of these errors is the claim that every priest has a right owing to immemorial custom to celebrate Mass according to the 1962 liturgical books. This erroneous view of custom concerning the celebration of Tridentine liturgy has unfortunately become more popular within certain Traditionalist circles as of late, and in response Fr. Huels correctly addresses this error as follows:
"3. It is correct that the general formula revoking the Tridentine Rite of Mass did not affect immemorial and centenary custom. However, the observance of the Rite of Mass of Pope Pius V was not a custom. It was imposed by law. A custom is introduced by the community (canon 23), whereas a law is introduced by the legislator. The use of the Roman Missal was decreed by universal law in 1570, and the Missal was revised in different ways by legislative acts of subsequent popes in 1604, 1634, 1888, 1920, 1955, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1965, and 1967. Although many of the ceremonies and details of the Mass of the Roman Rite largely developed through customs in the ancient and medieval Church, by 1570 the legal authority for the Rite of Mass was clearly that of papal law, not custom."

How often have we heard protestations from adherents to the Society of St Pius X (SSPX) that:
the excommunication of Lefebvre and Co. was "unjust"; and/or "illegal"?
neither Lefebvre nor the bishops consecrated by him are schismatic nor excommunicated?
neither the SSPX priests nor the adherents to the SSPX are in a state of schism, nor are they excommunicated?
Canonical experts — such as Cardinal Lara (actually, that should be Cardinal Castillo Lara!) and Fr. Gerald Murray make claims similar to the above?
the SSPX ARE in communion with Pope John Paul II — and include his name in the Canon of the Mass?

...as to the priests ordained by Archbishop Lefebvre whilst he was only suspensus a divinis, they did not incur excommunication, but are...classed as acephalous priests (headless priests, that is, without a leader), according to canon 265, and forbidden any "munus vel aliud sacrum ministerium" as long as they remain without incardination.
...The sacraments (of Baptism, the Eucharist and the anointing of the sick) administered illicitly by these priests are valid, although illicit.

ECÔNE full stop
FORTES IN FIDE, by Fr. Noel Barbara
"The whole drama of Mgr. Lefebvre is to have turned aside from his vocation.
"There seems to be no doubt that this bishop was chosen by God to defend the Church by proclaiming the faith. In any case, that is how it appeared to us and that is why we supported and helped him. And to defend the faith, he was not afraid to bring his sword into play and to accuse Vatican II of being "a schismatic council." It is true that even in his clearest statements he made use of disconcerting expressions, but the confidence which we placed in him caused us to take these for so many skilful political phrases, and even for olive branches extended to those in the new church who were willing to accept them. Alas! These illusions did not last long, and in 1979 we were forced to yield to the evidence. Mgr. Lefebvre was refusing God's call."

The Flat Earth Society and SSPX Type 'Traditionalists'
Many Catholics who love sacred tradition and who abhor the abuses which have so often characterized the immediate post-conciliar era have had at one time or another to wrestle with the response of the Society of St. Pius X and similar groups to this crisis. The piety and liturgical correctness of the SSPX proved a potent seduction. But, as the Greek schism showed, we may have all piety and beautiful liturgy, even martyrs who pour out their blood for Christ, but if we stray from the dogmatic certainties and parameters of the Church, schism remains schism. We do not doubt anyone's good intentions, but where Church dogma and the Promises of Christ to His visible Church until the end of time are concerned (Mt. 28:20) , good intentions, piety, and liturgical perfection are not sufficient. ...More

Flectamus genua, [kneel or genuflect?], and the Jews
"I wouldn't genuflect for the Jews." Fr. Angele (allegedly) to Max Longford.
HOWEVER, there seems to be some cultural problem here! Perhaps, in America, genuflecting is a precise synonym for kneeling? As it is not the custom for it to be so thought of here in Australia, Fr Angele should be respectful of Australian (and I suspect the rest of the world's) custom of believing that genuflecting is NOT synonymous with kneeling, and it would NOT become a valid custom despite the persistent use of the word "genuflect" in his letter of May 31, 1996.

Is The Society of St Pius X In Schism? Rome's Reply Of 27 October 1998 Declares: YES!
"The Pope is the supreme legislator in the Church. In an Apostolic Letter which he issued motu proprio (on his own initiative) he declared that Mons. Lefebvre and the priests Bernard Fellay, Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, Richard Williamson and Alfonso de Galarreta, have incurred the grave penalty of excommunication envisaged by ecclesiastical law. (Cf. Code of Canon Law, can. 1382)...While the priests of the Society of St. Pius X are validly ordained, they are also suspended a divinis..While it is true that participation in the Mass at the chapels of the Society of St. Pius X does not of itself constitute "formal adherence to the schism", such adherence can come about over a period of time as one slowly imbibes a schismatic mentality which separates itself from the teaching of the Supreme Pontiff and the entire Catholic Church classically exemplified in A Rome and Econe Handbook..." It's not "us" - it's "you"!
On Protestations of NOT being in Schism NOR of being Excommunicated

A matter that could be considered amusing, were it not so dreadfully sad, is the "no we aren't" response to statements of fact as to the SSPX bishops, priests, clergy, SSPX "adherents" and associated "traditionalist" orders being described as "schismatic and excommunicated." "No, we aren't", they say, "we are in communion with the Popes." They should add: "whether they (the popes) like it or not!"
Beside the fact that the Pope, the supreme legislator, has declared the above to be schismatic and excommunicated, a simple test can be applied as to whether he, the Pope, really meant what he said:
Can the SSPX or its adherents produce evidence of the inclusion of the names of Archbishop Lefebvre, Bishops Fellay, Williamson, de Galarreta, de Mallerais or Rangel 1 in the Annuario Pontificio?

I'm afraid the article is either ill-informed or deliberately mischievous. Whatever his descent may have been, "Anacletus II" was not a Pope. He was an antipope in opposition to the true Pope Innocent II. The journalist and his newspaper could have easily verified this by checking the widely available list of Popes. St Peter was the only Pope of Jewish descent (although admittedly very little is known of the ancestry of the Popes of the first couple of centuries.)...More

If this assumption is correct, then the Catholic Church has a serious problem: Vatican II could not be legitimate, since a legitimate ecumenical council may develop but may not contradict the earlier dogmatic teaching of the Church. To address the issue, of course, we must look at how the fathers of the Second Vatican Council understood ecumenism. Basically, most the Councils teaching concerning this matter is contained in Unitartis Redintegratio, which is the Council's Decree on Ecumenism. This document opens with the following paragraph:
"The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Christ the Lord founded one Church and one Church only. ...More

My Reasons For Withdrawing Support From The Society Of St Pius X
"All these (pre Pope John XXIII) Popes have resisted the union of the Church with the revolution; it is an adulterous union and from such a union only bastards can come. The rite of the new mass is a bastard rite, the sacraments are bastard sacraments. We no longer know if they are sacraments which give grace or do not give it. The priests coming out of the seminaries are bastard priests, who do not know what they are. They are unaware that they are made to go up to the altar, to offer the sacrifice of Our Lord Jesus Christ and to give Jesus Christ to souls." NOVUS ORDO WORDS OF CONSECRATION FROM THE MOZARABIC RITE
The Catholic Encyclopedia has this to say about the Consecration in the Mozarabic Rite.
The present printed form of the Recital is that of I Cor., xi, 23-6: "D. N. J. C. in qua nocte tradebatur etc." This agrees with the principal Eastern liturgies, but the Gallican had "Qui pridie quam pateretur" or some variant thereof, and the Mozarabic must once have had the same, possibly (as Leslie suggests) combining both datings with "Qui pridie quam pateretur" and "in ipsa nocte qua tradebatur etc." The form in the Silos Liber Ordinum of 1052 begins as at present, and in Toledo 35.6 it begins "Quoniam Dominus Jesu in qua nocte." It is certain that the Roman form of the Words of Institution was not used by the Spanish Church before the mission of Zannello (see above) in

Oh What A Tangled Web (some fringe dissidents) weave... - Footnote 5 UPDATED Jan 1, 2002
When "John" the web-master of "Ecclesia Militans"[1] web-site attempted to dominate the "Fidei Catholicae" list[2] (a site that was/is faithful to the magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church), but, in the course of doing so, by stating that of the "Novus Ordo Missae" (the new rite of Mass) "it is invalid", "sinful to attend it", and it "is an aid to the heresy of ecumenism" - he simply progressed along his chosen path towards (at least) proximate heresy. In effect, he accuses the post-Conciliar popes of heretically imposing a form of liturgy which was totally useless for the faithful - in fact, idolatrous; for, according to him, present day Catholics who attended the new Mass were committing sacrilege and simply partaking of common bread and wine, not the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
That he does not hold the same Faith as Catholics who are faithful to the magisterium is further evidenced in his editorial statement in "Ecclesia Militans" that:

One of the Society of St Pius X [SSPX] "Claims" Examined "Rome Speaks in re Murray
"In May 1997, Norbert Brunner, Bishop of Sion in Switzerland — the diocese where the seminary founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre for his Society of St. Pius X is located — issued a request for Vatican clarification of the canonical status of the SSPX. He received responses, published in the French periodical La Documentation Catholique, from the Congregation for Bishops and from the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts.
"In a short statement, the Congregation for Bishops concluded that "participation at their [SSPX] celebrations is objectively illicit because they are not in full communion with the Church, and they are a source of grave scandal and of division of the ecclesial community." It went on to say that the assistance of the faithful [at Society Masses] is not authorized except in cases of true necessity."

Pete Vere's Canonical History of Archbishop Lefebvre's Schism I was very much honored and privileged to receive from him an inscribed copy of the publication in booklet form. Pete expressed thanks for"constant help and spiritual support". His final words were: "Never again will we abandon St Peter." I must assure Pete that I and many others have been edified by his efforts; it is we who must be thankful, and add our Amen.
In my opinion, Pete is a very remarkable young man who has jam-packed into his young life an extraordinary span of human experiences. I am proud to have his acquaintance, friendship and results of his scholarship in the service of the Catholic Church.

"ROME WILL LOSE THE FAITH AND BECOME THE SEAT OF ANTICHRIST"
Unfortunately, we see here an actual example of the "blind" leading the "blind"!
Let us consider the following:
The above statement is slavishly accepted and promoted, by many deluded people — almost as if it is "of Faith" that the Blessed Virgin Mary spoke those words to Melanie Mathieu/Calvat and Maximin Giraud at La Salette.
Were these words spoken by the Virgin Mary all those years ago? Or were they, the repetition by Melanie of the apocalyptic ravings of deludeds (such as Luther — who had a penchant for calling the pope the anti-Christ.) It is interesting to note that Melanie made NO mention of this phrase until circa 1878!

Some Radical Traditionalist Fallacies Examined
In about mid-March 2003, on one of the many talk-fest forums, a Radical Traditionalist [who I here call "Peter"] made the following statements: "And there sure as Hell have been no saints made yet through the Novus Ordo mass."
"If anyone has gotten into heaven recently, it is in spite of the new mass. All the good values that Mother Teresa had were formed way before the new mass. All the elderly people I know and respect who have excellent Catholic values learned them before the new mass too and have followed practices like saying the rosary or wearing the scapular in these wretched modern times.
"Name me one virgin martyr like St. Maria Goretti, or one holy priest in the last 30 years who has been formed by the Novus Ordo. That will be about as easy as me finding a good looking 20 year old virgin Novus Ordo bride!

This list claims:
"This list exists for Roman Catholics of European descent who are interested in preserving pre-Vatican II Traditional Roman Catholicism. We oppose the Protestant and heretical "New Mass." Also, as Catholics, we oppose the communistic anti-White attitudes that are so rampant these days, and it is our goal to preserve our God-given European ethnic stock. We oppose interracial marriage and all other practices that endanger the existence of the European race. Fidei Defensor is a Latin term meaning "Defender of the Faith." Novus Ordo heretics, and non-Catholics are welcome to join because we are interested in helping them find the truth, but anti-Catholic infidels and anti-white bigots will be unsubscribed. Christ commanded that we teach all nations, not intermarry with all nations.

TRADITIONALISM: TRUE and FALSE by John N. Lupia, Ph. D.

To be a Catholic is to accept Tradition, both Divine and ecclesiastical. Divine or Sacred Tradition comes to us from the apostles and is built up, by way of dogmatic development, by the Magisterium (teaching office) of the Church, exercised by the Apostolic College (the bishops in union with the Pope) or the Pope personally. Sacred Tradition requires the adherence of divine and Catholic faith and only the Magisterium has the supernatural charism to authentically interpret its content.
Ecclesiastical traditions, on the other hand, are not part of the Catholic faith but of the way of life of the Church, as determined by legitimate authority, in various ages and places. There is an ecclesiastical tradition for each of the over 20 Rites and Churches which make up the communion of the Catholic Church (Roman, Byzantine, Maronite, Ruthenian etc.).

The Tragedy of Marcel Lefebvre, by Paul Stenhouse, M.S.C., Ph.D
It would be naïve in the extreme to claim that Lefebvre was excommunicated solely because of his support for truly traditional Catholic values; or because the post-Vatican II Church was jealous of his success in attracting seminarians to Econe.
As Pope Paul VI said many times, if all that Archbishop Lefebvre wanted was permission to say Mass in the Latin according to the Rite of Pius V, he would have granted it gladly.
But sadly, the seminary of Econe is not, as Lefebvre claims, just a Traditional' seminary like all those that existed prior to the Council. No pre-Vatican II seminary formed its priests in a spirit of opposition to the reigning Pope, to an Ecumenical Council, or to the teaching authority of the Church.
No pre-Vatican II seminaries demanded that students for the priesthood reject the official Catholic Church, in order to adhere to some allegedly 'faithful' Church for which in the words of Marcel Lefebvre, 'disobedience (to the Pope) is a serious obligation'.

Was Vatican Council II Voided by Pope Pius Ii's 'Execrabilis'?
Certain traditionalists have "hung their hats" on Pius Ii's Execrabilis as being proof positive that Vatican Council II, (because "it was called to introduce drastic change into the Church"), is automatically and beforehand declared to be null and void...According to one: "In 1460 Pope Pius II issued a Papal Bull "Execrabilis." This Bull was infallible and relates specifically to Faith and Morals - nor can it be revoked or annulled. In effect, the Bull pronounced that a Council may not be used to re-open Judgements. Once the Church has made a Judgement, it cannot be questioned by Councils or future Popes. ...More

What Michael Davies omitted from POPE PAUL VI'S LETTER TO ARCHBISHOP MARCEL LEFEBVRE in Chapter 15 of his "Apologia pro Marcel Lefebvre
(This letter was sent to Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre one month after he visited the Pope on September 11, 1976. The archbishop had rejected parts of the Vatican II decrees and some of the subsequent post-conciliar enactments of the Holy See and had been the object of widespread publicity as he celebrated Tridentine Masses in various parts of Europe. In June, 1976, the archbishop had defied a direct order from the Pope not to ordain seminarians at the seminary he founded in Econe, Switzerland. In this letter, the Pope told the archbishop that while pluralism in the church is legitimate, it must be a licit pluralism rooted in obedience. The Pope said the archbishop, rather than practicing obedience, had propagated and organized a rebellion. ...More

Why do we? - Receive Communion in the hand, standing? by Paul Stenhouse, M.S.C., Ph.D
During the first four centuries, however, as Communion time drew near, the cantor at the Mass would call out Sancta Sanctis, "Holy Things to the holy," and the faithful would approach the altar, bowed but standing.
At that time the universal custom in the Church was to receive the Sacred Species in the hand.
Thus St Ambrose (339-397 A.D.) Bishop of Milan, asked the Emperor Theodosius how he dared to receive Holy Communion with his hand dripping with the blood of the innocent, after the massacre of Thessalonica. St Augustine (354-430 A.D.) whom St Ambrose himself baptised, writes of a Bishop who used to receive Communion in the hand from a priest who in his turn received Communion in his hand from the Bishop. St Basil (330-379 A.D.) writes of a priest who places portion of the Eucharist in the hands of a communicant who then puts it in his mouth with his own hand. St John Chrysostom (345-407 A.D.) speaks
